WHAT IS A JUNKET?
Junkets first started on the East Coast as a means to lure seasoned gamblers away from Las Vegas and into Atlantic City. Now, Las Vegas casinos do the same thing, in order to lure people away from the East Coast and into their own golden coffers. A junket always involves travel and usually involves a group. The junket operator (hired by the casino) will charter an airline to take 80 or so gamblers from one coast to the other. They will all receive full RFB and have run of the casino. In return, they all pay the junket operator a certain amount of money (usually between $5,000 and $10,000) up front. When they get to the casino they can use this money to gamble with. Sometimes they get a credit line, and sometimes the operator gives them the full amount back in non-negotiable chips. Comps, on the other hand, are given to you after you gamble. Although airline reimbursement is possible, it will not happen until after you play and meet a certain minimum playing criteria, like over $100 average bets for four hours a day, junkets are available only to higher rollers.
COMPS DEFINED:
Simply put, comps are complimentary (read free) goods and services provided by the casino for the enjoyment of their patrons. Comps are the icing on the cake for the casino player. They can range from free soft drinks on the low end all the way to free luxury suites and private jet flights to Vegas on the high end, with everything in between. They are available to EVERYBODY who gambles at a casino. Even the small time player at the nickel slots can get their share. The quality and quantity of comps the player receives are dependent upon how much the casino thinks you are gambling, and where you gamble.This short guide to comps is directed at the mid to low roller gambler. The high rollers already know how the comps game works and don’t need me to help them out. What most people don’t know is that comps are available to EVERYONE who gambles at the casino. They want to make you feel welcome and comfortable in their establishment. They want you to enjoy yourself and come back often. You are at the casino to have fun. Receive and enjoy your share of comps, trust me you have earned them. Everybody get comps. Usually the cocktail waitress will notice you gambling and ask you if you want a drink. If you accept these comps, just remember, the drink is free but, you must tip the waitress for the service. There are two reasons for this. One, if you expect her to come back, you have to make it worth her while. Second, these people work for minimum wage, the bulk of their income comes from tips. Just remember, the comps are free, the service must be compensated by you.
HOW MUCH DO I NEED TO DEPOSIT?
Out junkets start at a very reasonable minimum deposit level of £2500 and vary depending on which casino we will be visiting. Required deposit levels will be listed in the Casino section.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I LOSE MY DEPOSIT QUICKLY?
We hope this does not happen but if you lose your money too quickly you would have qualified for the trip and all expenses will be paid, and no further play is required. However, if you choose to make further buy-ins then all minimum bet rules are ‘out of the window’ - you can play as much or as little as you choose.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOT PLAY TO THE REQUIRED MINIMUM PLAY LEVELS?
You will usually get gentle reminders from the casino management through the junket representative (myself) to either play more, or if you choose, to pay for the trip. This is not a common complaint from the casinos as the players know all the requirements before they book the trip. The likely result of a player ‘not playing’ is that they would probably not be invited on one of our junkets again.
DO I ONLY GET “COMPED” IF I LOSE?
No, if the players win then the money is all theirs, and they get a free trip. The casinos only ask that the customers give them a fair chance at trying to win their money. If the player wins then that’s fine.
WINNINGS
Winnings are usually paid out in the currency that you bought in for (usually Euros). However, if the casino has had a particularly bad week they may have to pay excess winnings in either Pound Sterling or US Dollars.
WHY COME ON A JUNKET?
The majority of our players are UK based and as we all know ‘comps’ are rare in the UK except for free meals and drinks. To attract business that they would otherwise probably not get, many foreign casinos now offer junket packages to attract the decent players. If you had a choice of a free dinner at your local UK casino or a free 3-day, all expenses trip to almost anywhere in Europe, what would you choose? If the players are going to gamble anyway why not take the free trip that goes with it.
